The Truth Business

With misinformation rising online and off, it’s getting harder and harder to sort fact from fiction. At the same time, everyday people struggle to find common ground on issues that affect them, because when they need accurate information to make decisions it’s not there. In short, we are losing our shared set of facts.

The Truth Business is a project that ties the loss of independent, impartial journalism everywhere to the rise of misinformation, polarization, and other harmful impacts that leave people and democracies less safe.

Journalism loss is a global problem. But in the United States alone, close to 3,000 news outlets have closed in recent years. Two thirds of U.S. counties lack a daily news outlet, and scholars say a growing portion of Americans now reside in “news deserts,” or places that lack any dedicated outlet.

The Truth Business investigates the impact of journalism loss, while also exploring efforts to strengthen news at the local, regional, and national levels—so that independent and impartial information can keep us safe, informed, and engaged.
